Mitchell has certainly had an eventful life in just over two weeks! It occurred to me that many adults have had fewer procedures in a lifetime than he has already endured. Last night, his nurse was concerned that his pupils were not equal in size, so another ultrasound was ordered. Rather than being an inconvenience, it has resulted in a better diagnosis, neurologically, than had previously been reported. The neurosurgeon, or neurologist, not certain which, did not see any blood in Mitchell's ventricle. This news is both very encouraging and important in anticipating what he might be facing developmentally.
His chest tube was taken out this morning - a planned removal this time! - and now he has four remaining lines and a feeding tube in place. Because of some problems with feeding, he will be treated for acid reflux. Jodi is hoping that by decreasing the amount and then increasing it more gradually this may not be an issue for him. He will most likely stay in NICU for at least another day or two as they work on resolving the feeding problem, but things are progressing well.
Michele Hockema drove over from Athens today to entertain Madison and Mackenzie. She must be a very put-together type of person, because she bought the girls donuts on what happens to be National Donut Day. Very impressive! Shawnna will be arriving tonight and "playing" with the girls for the next couple of days and giving Ted and Jodi a little time together. Pray that Mitchell will continue to improve in every way and that the family can have a somewhat relaxing weekend. Thanks again to everyone for your concern and continued prayers.

We rejoice with you in each report of improvement and continue to pray for Mitchell's complete healing. Thank you for keeping us updated.
You guys are doing so great! I just wanted to offer some encouragement and insight on the reflux issue. Reflux is normal in babies... it's just "spitting up." In babies like ours, it's a much bigger deal because of the potential for any of that fluid making it into the lungs and being aspirated.
We ended up having to solve the problem with a fundoplication. We hesitated with this procedure pretty intensely, but ended up trusting it was the right thing to do. Since the fundoplication, Eli has made a complete turn around in health. It was very obviously something we needed to, regardless of how unnatural it is. I just wanted to encourage you, should that path come your way, don't be as scared as we were. Every baby refluxes, this is normal. Ours just need a little extra help.
Congratulations on the step-down, too! We're still reading intently.
